Chapter 15

Glad You Remembered

9:53 P.M.

SAFE HOUSE APARTMENT

Wearing pants and a black, short-sleeved t-shirt, his back to the bedroom door, Jaxon stood at the side of a bed, his head bowed, his mind seeing the men he had killed at the gentlemen’s club as well as those who had tried to run him, Boomer, and Kaylee off the road.

Jaxon shut his eyes and rubbed his eyelids with a thumb and forefinger before squeezing the bridge of his nose. Lord, I realize the battle isn’t with flesh and blood...but rather with the evil that exists in the unseen. His chest swelled, and he blew out a gust of wind. But sometimes, he paused, sometimes bad people want to do bad things. And they just need to be stopped.

He thought back to his childhood days and his numerous fistfights. All had been against bigger and stronger kids. Most had been in defense of a smaller kid from a schoolyard bully. He had learned early on that bullies withered in the face of opposition. And those that did not thought twice about their resolve after a punch to the nose.

Fast forward a couple decades, and the only things that had changed were the tools and the actors. Guns had replaced fists. Terrorists had replaced bullies.

I know you’ve put upon my heart a desire to defend the weak, Lord. A pulse. But sometimes, the images of those he had killed to save others returned, sometimes, the weight of this cross gets a little heavy.

Following a few moments of deliberation, he picked up his phone, scrolled down, and read a Bible verse. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. Jaxon tipped his head back to stare at the ceiling. Give me the strength to do Your work. He thought of Kaylee and her father. And, if it be Your will, let me bring them both to safe—

“Knock—knock.”

Jaxon whirled around to see Kaylee’s head and shoulders poking through the eighteen-inch crack of the partially open door.

“Mind if I come in?”

He spun back, tossed the mobile onto the bed, and snatched his long-sleeved shirt.

“No. Don’t.” She scampered across the room.

He shoved his right arm into the garment.

She caught the shirt, keeping him from donning the covering. “Please. Don’t do that on my account.” She slid the fabric off his arm, placed it on the bed to her right, and looked at him. “It’s okay. I’m not weirded out by,” she glimpsed his scarred forearms and peered into his eyes.

Jaxon dipped his chin to break eye contact with her before swallowing twice in succession, as a tingling sensation swept up the back of his neck and across his face.

A trace of a smile played out over her features. “Honest...I’m not.”

Rubbing palms back and forth over his exposed arms, he gave her a quick peek and turned away while clearing his throat. His heart rate had spiked, and his mouth was dry. From off the bed, he picked up a nearly flattened white tube and pinched it near the opening.
